Hope Medical for South Sudan

About Hope Medical

Dr. Alex Logono, MD, is the founder of Hope Medical for South Sudan. Born in Buagyi, South Sudan—where access to healthcare has long been nonexistent—he carries a deeply personal connection to the mission of serving underserved communities.

At just nine years old, Dr. Logono was displaced by civil war and became one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan,” a group of 26,000 child refugees who endured unimaginable hardship. Along his journey, he was conscripted as a child soldier and later lived in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, where he witnessed the tragic, preventable deaths of close friends due to lack of medical care. These experiences inspired his lifelong commitment to medicine and healing.

In 2001, he resettled in Utica, New York, through a U.S. program for the “Lost Boys.” He began his education at Mohawk Valley Community College before transferring to the State University of New York at Albany, where he earned his Bachelor of Science while working as a nursing assistant. He later completed his medical degree at the American University of Antigua College of Medicine.

Dr. Logono went on to complete residency training at the UCSF-affiliated Natividad Family Medicine Program and, in 2023, joined Salinas Valley Health as a hospitalist. Today, as a board-certified family medicine physician, he provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages while pursuing his greater mission: building a free medical center in his home village of Buagyi, where countless lives—especially those of women and children—have been lost due to lack of healthcare.

Dr. Logono’s remarkable journey—from surviving war and displacement to becoming a physician—stands as a testament to resilience, hope, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others through healthcare.

Hope Medical transformed our community's health with their dedicated care and support.
